Muaupoko Tribal Authority Election Update

9 August 2010

The MTA new constitution that was passed at the last AGM has now been registered. It adopts the views expressed by whanau during the consultative process to ensure greater hapu control over their election processes for electing their own Hapu representatives onto the MTA Board. We want to do this right so we invite all Hapu and whanau to an informative hui to discuss how this new Hapu election process might work.

Muaupoko Tribal Authority Inc. elections are upon us. The MTA's new constitution that was passed at the last AGM is in the process of being registered. It adopts the views expressed by whanau during the consultative process to ensure greater hapu control over their election processes for electing their own representatives. It has become apparent that several hapu may not currently be in a position to run their elections and the MTA is keen to assist hapu to do this. We are seeking legal advice as to how we might be able to assist with the election process under the applicable constitutional rules. The MTA will also need to discuss with each hapu their individual needs for assistance. We want to do this right but hapu may need a little more time so we anticipate that elections may need to be held slightly later than required.
