                                                 Whanau Ora Update

15 June 2010

On the 8th April 2010, the Whanau Ora Report was released in Wellington and the Hon Tariana Turia was appointed the Minister responsible for Whanau Ora by Prime Minister John Key.

The 6th May 2010 was another significant day in Aotearoa, the Government made a pre-budget announcement and placed its faith in families: a day in which the state invests in the potential of whanau. The Governments investment gives traction to the Maori Party's promise and allows for 20 Whanau Ora Providers in the first wave.

Since then the three Iwi in the region between Te Awa O Rangitikei and Whareroa (near McKay's Crossing) are sharing tino
rangatiratanga and expressing whanaungatanga by collaborating together.

Muaupoko Tribal Authority Inc., Te Runanga O Raukawa and Te Atiawa Ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust are sharing ideas in working together under the umbrella of Whanau Ora and are developing a joint Expression of Interest (EOI) to be submitted for consideration by Tariana and her Team.

We need to prepare for the inevitable changes that are ahead; to collaborate; co-operate and communicate with each other, stating "we have not been here before - but we can and will succeed, if we remain true to the teachings of our tupuna, which remind us that the solutions reside within us". Professor Whatarangi Winiata (August 2009)

The three Iwi are committed to the survival and wellbeing of whanau and we will achieve this by sharing our resources and placing our faith in whanau.
