Treaty Claims Update 11th June 2010
On the 22nd May 2010, Muaupoko Tribal Authority Inc. hosted a facilitated Claimants and Hapu hui at Kawiu
Marae. The purpose of the hui was to discuss a collaborative approach to advance Muaupoko's Treaty claims and interests. The hui was well attended with a majority of Claimants represented.
Muaupoko Tribal Authority delivered a presentation that encouraged a more collaborative approach. It proposed the establishment of a Muaupoko Claim Committee to drive the pre-mandate treaty activity and supported by
Muaupoko Tribal Authority's infrastructure and resources. Muaupoko Tribal Authority noted that the Crown requires a robust mandate before negotiations begin and proposed that the Muaupoko Tribal Authority take the lead on behalf of Muaupoko's claimants and hapu. Muaupoko Tribal Authority's approach is to always ask: "What will best serve Muaupoko's interest".
Discussions that followed after the presentation were very positive with a common theme in the room being
"Don't leave us behind". Muaupoko Tribal Authority is developing a process around establishing a Muaupoko
Claims Committee that will be competency based to drive the activity and be open and transparent.
