Muaūpoko Hapū

Muaūpoko is made up of seven recognised hapū, each with its own whakapapa, histories, whānau connections and role within the wider iwi. Together, our hapū are central to the identity, strength and future of Muaūpoko. The seven hapū represented within Muaūpoko are Ngāi Te Ao, Ngārue, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Pāriri, Ngāti Tamarangi, Ngāti Whanokirangi and Punahau. These hapū are connected through whakapapa and through their enduring relationships with our whenua, waterways, marae and communities.
The whakapapa of Muaūpoko hapū reflects generations of interconnected tūpuna and whānau relationships. Historical whakapapa records also identify earlier hapū names and ancestral lines associated with Muaūpoko, reflecting the depth and complexity of our whakapapa over time. Mark Moses’ 2026 evidence includes whakapapa charts for Muaūpoko hapū and ancestral lines, reinforcing that the history of Muaūpoko hapū extends beyond the present-day seven-hapū structure.
The Role of Our Hapū
Our hapū are an essential part of Muaūpoko life. They help preserve and strengthen whakapapa, tikanga, mātauranga and relationships between whānau. Hapū also provide important leadership, support our marae and create opportunities for whānau to participate in iwi kaupapa.
Through strong hapū connections, whānau can maintain their sense of identity and belonging while contributing to the collective aspirations of Muaūpoko.
Hapū Representation on the Board
Muaūpoko Tribal Authority is governed through hapū representation. Each recognised hapū appoints representatives to the MTA Board, ensuring hapū and whānau perspectives are directly represented in the governance and strategic direction of the iwi.
Board representatives provide an important connection between Muaūpoko Tribal Authority and the hapū and whānau they represent. Through this structure, decisions about the wellbeing, development and future of Muaūpoko remain grounded in the aspirations and experiences of our people.
